Operations Lead
Carmen Hilbert
What I Do
I work on operations and broad strategy, with a heavy dose of editorial nitpicking, at Longview.
I help the team thrive in a fractured media landscape by finding the right ways to connect with the people who are most eager to listen to our stories.
Before Longview, I cultivated a broad patchwork of professional experience. I mostly worked in the film industry as a cinematographer, with side quests at New York Magazine and as a software engineer for the New York Department of Education. Most recently, I did operations and finance for Osprey Media.
My Background
As is perhaps a unifying feature of the team, I had my worldview deeply shaken as a young person. I was an undergrad studying neuroscience before the replication crisis was widely discussed, and it rattled my sense of how we know what we claim to know to realize that so many experts in the psychological and biological sciences had been led astray by shaky statistical foundations.
Ultimately, I came away convinced that it’s really, really hard to know what’s true. Our culture has many truth-seeking technologies — the scientific method, prediction markets, and meditation among them. The one I’m most compelled by in our current moment, though, is journalism.
