What I Do
I'm a reporter and producer, and the co-founder and editor-in-chief here at Longview.
The kind of journalism I practice is often called narrative journalism, which is original investigative reporting fused with meticulous storycraft. I cover a wide range of subjects, but every story I make circles the same question: What do people believe, and how do those beliefs shape institutions and the course of history?
That question drew me to the strange and high-stakes world of the people racing to build artificial general intelligence, in The Last Invention, which Apple named one of the best podcasts of 2025. It has also taken me deep inside the recommendation algorithms quietly reshaping what millions of people believe, in Rabbit Hole, and into the enduring forces behind mob behavior, in The Witch Trials of J.K. Rowling.
Before Longview, I helped create The Daily at The New York Times, where I worked from 2016 to 2021. There I reported, produced, and developed stories and series on technology, elections, terrorism, and culture, and shared in the newsroom's Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage in 2018. Early in my career, I told science stories about human nature at Radiolab.
My Background
I grew up in Louisiana and rural Illinois, where my introduction to journalism was delivering the local paper in a town of about 1,000 people. In college, I studied theology and storytelling, which is where my fascination with how people form their beliefs (and how those beliefs shape the world) took root.
Now I split my time between a small Midwestern town, where I walk in the woods and kayak on the river, and Brooklyn, where you can find me on a run or having a beer at my local haunt.
My Ethics
I take my commitment to fairness and open-mindedness seriously, and I work hard to set aside my own biases and preferences to genuinely understand the subjects of my stories. When I give my word to a source — off the record, on background — I keep it. The trust of my sources and of the public is the foundation of all of my work, and I treat it that way.
